Two questions I have often been asked include: “How did you build your Professional Brand?” and “Now, how do you find time to keep it going?”
Let’s explore what I call, “My Secrets: Start Early. Get Focused & Disciplined. Be Consistent.
Sounds easy, right? Wrong! Our lives are full of interruptions, roadblocks, false starts. Is it worth the effort? The answer is simple – not easy, just simple. Let’s get started.
Wherever you are in your career it is important to start now. Don’t wait for the right time, this is the right time.
I learned this lesson as I was advancing in my career. During that time, I had a wise mentor who taught me the first thing you must do is answer the question, “What do you want to be known for?” He knew my actions made up a small and important piece of the puzzle that created people’s opinions of me. Your actions do the same for you.
Take a moment and ask yourself these questions:
- What are my values? Values are the things you personally believe are important in your life and your work. Things like reliability, honesty, trustworthiness, etc.
- What attributes do you want people to associate with me? Attributes are the qualities or characteristics of a person – sense of humor, friendliness, hard worker, reliability, etc.
GET FOCUSED & DISCIPLINED
All careers offer twists and turns, roadblocks and land mines. These distractions will become less significant if you challenge yourself to do two important things:
- Become highly disciplined before you take action
- Keep your focus on who you are and where you want your career to take you
At one point in my career journey, I was offered a new position. Everything seemed right – the job, the position, the salary. One draw-back was the culture of the organization. The culture was aggressive and brought a high level of stress. As I faced decision time I heard my mentor’s words, “Focus on your values and what you desire most – what you stand for and what is important to you.”
My disciplined approach made me stop and think before I acted, and my commitment to being focused on what was most important to me helped me think clearly about what I really wanted to do. I knew the culture was not a good fit with my values. I turned down the position and never looked back.
Once you have determined your values and where you want to be in 3, 5 or 10 years, it is essential for you to be consistent in your actions. Consistency helps you become known for the person you want to be, the values you hold dear.
Examples of where you can incorporate consistency in career decisions are the organizations you choose to volunteer your time, speaking engagements you choose and topics for the articles you post or publish. Searching for and accepting assignments that represent your values can support your Professional Brand in meaningful and memorable ways. People begin to rely on you in areas that support your brand – building trust and credibility.
I’ll share with you another of my secrets – I haven’t always done everything right. I worked hard to be true to what was important to me with consistency and focus. Sometimes, however, life got in the way. When that happens to you, reach out to professionals to help guide you.
That is how we met Alexis. Alexis came to Plousha Moore Group at a turning point in her professional and personal life.
